METRO Transit Service & Inspection Building

City of Houston METRO Transit System

Smith & Company served as prime design architect for a new Maintenance Yard and Park & Ride campus for the proposed University Line for Metro’s comprehensive light rail program. The project included several facilities including a new Service & Inspection Building (SIS), Maintenance Building, Wash Building, and Parking Garage. Located at the Westpark Toll Road and Hwy 59 at the existing Hillcroft Transit Center, the campus will be the terminus for the University Corridor which will extend approximately 11.3 miles traveling from the Hillcroft Transit Center to the Eastwood Transit Center just east of I45 near the University of Houston.

The 4-level Phase I parking garage has been designed with four parking decks for 1500 cars with area to expand to 3,100 spaces in Phase II. This garage incorporates a bus/rail transit center on the ground level. The exterior of the structure utilizes high-tech materials such as aluminum panels and clerestory glazing, to evoke a modern futuristic environment that emulates the technical requirements of light rail travel.

Stair towers are designed at an angle and elevator shafts will be built with open glass to provide several examples of movement, both vertical and horizontal. The north elevation of the garage will utilize painted metal mesh panels that will screen the transit center activities from the pedestrian zone where light rail passengers converge.
